Frequently Asked Questions

How long have you been photographing weddings?

I photographed my first wedding in the Napa Wine Country in 1992 and have made wedding photography my full time business since 1996. I have photographed over 800 weddings and I regularly work at some of the premiere wedding locations in the Napa, Sonoma and San Francisco areas.

How do you describe your style of wedding photography?

I photograph weddings in a natural style with less direction on the part of the photographer. I help people relax around the camera and then capture those spontaneous moments when people are being themselves and look their best. My extensive experience in wedding photography helps my clients feel confident that the photography will go easily and happily. Each wedding is a unique and special event and photographing them is a very personal business for me. I emphasize quality over quantity and prefer to give my complete attention to a select number of high-quality events in any one season. I love working with people and I bring a sense of respect, artistry, caring and fun to the weddings I photograph.

Do you offer wedding packages?

Every wedding is unique. For that reason I do not offer specific packages but rather, I work with you to create the level of service that suits your needs best. I find that people prefer the flexibility and greater control of the final result that this provides, rather than a one-size-fits-all package. I am available to photograph your complete wedding, from getting ready to the end of the evening in order to preserve the emotions, the activities and the ambiance of the whole day. I am also happy to discuss photographing smaller events that may require less extensive coverage.

What does your fee include?

Typically my fee includes all pre-wedding planning and scheduling of group and family photographs, wedding day photography and delivery of 200 to 400 or more proof prints, depending on the size of your event. Proof prints are high quality 4X6 size color and black and white photographs and are mounted in professional-quality, archival preview albums. I edit the proofs so there are no unflattering photos and I arrange them in chronological order in your proof albums. The proof albums are yours to keep.

As a part of my service we talk by telephone, email and in person. Well in advance of your wedding I learn your specific needs and requests as well as letting you know what to expect on wedding day, so things will flow smoothly. After your wedding I am happy to talk to you by telephone, email or in person to assist you in selecting photos and creating your wedding album layout. There is no additional fee for these meetings.

Reprints, enlargements and wedding albums are not included in my fee for wedding day photography. They may be purchased at a time and in quantities of your choosing. I would also be pleased to photograph your rehearsal dinner or an engagement session. These items are either charged separately or included in the single fee, as you prefer.

Do you work with an assistant?

In all but the smallest, most intimate weddings I work with an assistant. During the group and family photographs we work closely together to minimize time spent and to maximize efficiency. My assistants are qualified photographers and during the wedding we both photograph your event to increase our number of great shots.

What type of equipment do you use?

I use the latest professional, digital equipment, including Nikon digital 35mm cameras for their ease in capturing the fleeting, candid moments and for their wide variety of lenses. I carry numerous lenses to capture the best image, whether extreme wide angle, powerful telephoto or super close-up macro lens. I have duplicates or backups of almost every piece of equipment and can switch seamlessly in the event of mechanical difficulty. More important, using the equipment never distracts me from the photographic opportunities that occur.

What about black and white photography vs. color?

Color photography captures the beautiful scenery, spectacular lighting effects and a true record of your event. Black & white photos are timeless and enable creation of artistic images not possible any other way. Photographing in digital format, all images are captured in color, but I can convert a certain number of your images to black & white. These make beautiful black & white prints and you may choose the proportion of black & white to color proof prints. Later, any image may be ordered as either a color or a black & white print. Sepia toning for black & white prints is available for your proof prints or when you order reprints and enlargements. Special printing and digital retouching are available for either color or black & white prints, if needed.

What about group and family photos?

I believe that the most important photos are the natural, artistic and spontaneous moments that occur throughout your wedding day. Family and wedding party group photos are important, too, but should not dominate your day. For this reason we plan these shots in advance and place them in the schedule so they take their proper place in the flow of events. We do the group photos quickly and efficiently with a light touch and a fun attitude.

Do you travel for weddings?

I primarily photograph weddings and events in the Napa and Sonoma Wine Country as well as in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are no travel fees for weddings in the Napa and Sonoma Wine Country. I am happy to discuss photographing your event outside of northern California. Travel and lodging expenses for distant events are charged in addition to the wedding photography fee.

What do you do with the negatives?

Digital photography does not produce traditional negatives. However, purchase of a CD or DVD with the high-resolution images from your wedding can be added to the initial fee, or may be purchased after your wedding.

What is the next step?

Please contact me by phone or email and we can discuss the details of your wedding, my availability and more about my services. I look forward to hearing from you!
